Appendix B. Wedding of Sydney Thorp to Peggy de Moraville

A STREATLEY WEDDING.

Captain S. R. Thorp, R.A., and Miss de Moraville.

The marriage was solemnised at the Parish Church of St. Mary’s, Streatley, Berkshire on Saturday, of Captain Sydney Richard Thorp, Royal Artillery, son of the late Mr Richard Thorp, of The Glen. Seaton, Devon,  and of London, and Miss Elizabeth Margaret de Moraville, daughter of late Mr. John de Moraville and of Mrs de Moraville, of Wallingford Lodge, Streatley. The Rev. Dr. C. Former officiated and Mr. Dick Fletcher, a brother officer of the bridegroom, was best man.

H. N. Dudding, Royal Artillery, a friend of the bridegroom, was at the organ, and the hymns sung were “O Love Divine ” and “O Perfect Love”.  Mr. John de Moraville, of the Queen’s Own Hussars, gave away his sister, who wore a period gown of cream satin bea**.. trimmed with a pearl girdle. Her train was an heirloom  Brussels lace – lined with pale pink with a cluster of orange blossom and her head dress was of pearls. She carried a bouquet of white carnations, lilies of the valley and white heather. Master George Behrend, wearing a Court suit of apricot coloured satin, carried the bride’s train. The bridesmaids and girl attendants, Audrey de Moraville (sister of the bride), Miss Yvonne Ziegler, Miss Kathleen Cousins, Miss Julia Behrend, Miss Maureen Chichester and Miss Pamela Chance, wore frocks of apricot chiffon and gold tissue, with wreaths of gold leaves on their net caps. They carried bouquets of apricot shaded carnations. The bridegroom’s gifts to the bridesmaids were silk pochettes. A bevy of white-clad children scattered rose petals before the bride and bridegroom as they left the church for the reception held by Mrs. de Moraville at Wallingford Lodge.

In the evening Mrs. de Moraville entertained one hundred villagers at a dance in Wallingford Lodge.

Captain and Mrs Thorp are spending their honeymoon in Switzerland and Paris and the bride’s going away dress was of pale jade green printed crepe de Chine and covered with a crepe de Chine coat of a darker shade of green with hat to match.
